How many zones should a home irrigation system have?
One zone is usually a compromise. Calculate zone count from hydraulic limits, plant demand and irrigation technology.
Zone count drives efficiency
Each zone is an independent hydraulic and scheduling unit. Correct grouping improves both plant health and water use.
Hydraulic limit first
If total demand exceeds safe usable flow, you must split zones regardless of garden shape.
Then split by plant demand
Turf, shrubs and drought-tolerant plants should not share identical schedules in most cases.
Separate by technology too
Keep drip and pop-up in different zones due to different operating characteristics.
Practical rule: 2 to 4 zones
For many 50-250 sqm gardens, 2-4 zones provide strong control without unnecessary complexity.
