The physics is simple — water intensity drops off toward the edge of the throw, so if two heads don't quite touch, the strip of lawn between them gets noticeably less water than everywhere else, even though the plan on paper looked like full coverage.

Zone size isn't limited by how much room you have; it's limited by available flow. If your meter delivers 12 gpm at the hose bib and each rotor head pulls 3 gpm, you can't run five heads off one valve. They'll fit on the pipe fine, but the moment the valve opens, all five run at reduced pressure and the actual radius drops well below what the box promised.

Rule of thumb: add up the rated flow of every head you want on a zone and leave a 10-15% cushion for friction loss in the pipe. If the total is over your available flow, split it into two zones with a second valve — don't just install it anyway and hope it's close enough, because it rarely is.

It feels efficient at the time: the pipe's already running past that flower bed, so why not tap into it. In practice it's one of the most expensive mistakes because it guarantees something gets watered wrong. Turf wants short, frequent cycles to avoid runoff on compacted soil. Shrub beds want longer, less frequent soaks that reach deeper roots. Drip emitters run at a flow rate measured in gallons per hour, nothing like the gallons-per-minute of a spray or rotor head.

You can't reconcile those needs on one valve no matter how you program the controller — one planting always gets the wrong amount. The fix is a separate valve per planting type, even if that means a bigger controller and a couple of extra valves. It's the difference between a system that runs fine for years and one you're constantly patching.
